Sokkia was founded in 1920 in Tokyo, Japan. It was originally known as the Sokkisha Company and manufactured transits. In 1980 Sokkisha acquired Lietz who previously distributed Sokkisha products. Over the years Sokkisha's product line grew to include surveying and GPS equipment such as levels, total stations, theodolites, lasers and planimeters. In 1990 the company celebrated its 70th anniversary and changed its name to Sokkia. Sokkia continues to manufacture survey equipment of the highest caliber.
